Sometimes, we may feel stuck in life, tired of the hustle and bustle of work and daily routine. We just want to get away from it all. So, we go on a vacation and get that temporary recharge. However, when we return from our travels, in a flash we go back to our old lifestyle.

But if we managed to pause and ask ourselves deep questions, we would start to shift our views. We would see things in a new light. How could we transform the temporary positive effect of our trips into lasting change? For instance, could we turn our travel and vacation into a self-growth retreat? Could we use that synergy between personal growth and travel to improve ourselves and realize our potential?

Let’s take a look at George’s story. Does it all sound familiar?

George used his vacations as a temporal getaway from an undesirable reality. Each time he felt overwhelmed with his workplace tasks, demands and expectations from others, he’d press that magic 'escape' button to go on a trip and enjoy that feeling of freedom for a short period of time. He would book a luxury resort with a private beach or stay in a trendy hotel in the very center of a big city; he would visit dozens of museums or go on adventure quad trips. Then, he’d come back to his routine and daily life again.

After a while, he’d feel that something was amiss. The good aftertaste of his vacation escape vanished quickly. He found himself alone battling unpleasant emotions and thoughts:

“I don’t want to go back to that horrible office! I haven’t imagined my life going this way! I can’t live like this anymore!”

“Get me out of here!” he said in dismay when coming back to the office after another short vacation.

Then he closed his eyes and heard an echo-like voice:

“There’s no escape, be the creator of your new life. Be an artist of stillness in motion. Let your life flow like an ever-changing landscape. Go with the flow of your brush.”

George: “Who are you?”

The Voice: “I am your inner voice, the sound of your soul.

George: “But who am I? Why am I here? How can I achieve my dreams and goals? How can I live in alignment with my soul?”

The Voice: “Those questions are the beginning of your journey. The deeper you dive within, the more abundance, fulfillment, and happiness you’ll create in your life, in the lives of people around you, and beyond.

Listen to what your heart tells you and where you need to go. Be a curious and conscious traveler. Allow your inner journey to unfold itself. In this way, you can turn your vacation into a personal transformation. During your transformational trips, you plant a seed of change you want to create in your life. When you come back home, you still continue to grow. Above all, everything becomes a journey of expansion and transformation. No need for an 'escape' button anymore. Are you ready?”

The moral of the story is the importance of listening. We can learn to listen to others with our undivided attention and curiosity. However, it is very crucial for us to train that muscle for listening to ourselves, our inner voice, our truth. Retreat travel is a perfect way to withdraw from the clutter of everyday problems to start hearing our true voice.

Now, let´s take a closer look at the ways how retreat-style travel transforms us.

1. Traveling pushes us out of the comfort zone

Solo travel helps us step out of our comfort zone. It moves us toward new things that we wouldn’t find out in the familiar environment of our own home. We stop relying on our past or habitual patterns and immerse ourselves in local culture, traditions, customs, and other phenomena. When we step outside of our box, we open a space for ourselves to adapt to new situations more easily. The more challenges we have, the more new skills and approaches we adopt. In other words, we strengthen our intelligence.

2. Personal growth through travel gives us new perspectives

New places or settings can challenge our belief system. When we experience something at first hand, it may lead us to question our preconceived ideas about it. E.g., by spending time alone in a cottage in the forest we may start to notice and appreciate the wildflowers, buzzing, and humming of insects, and other wonders of nature around us. We let nature widen our view on life.

3. Traveling for personal growth unleashes our creativity

When we travel alone, we become more flexible and observant in the moment. We rely on ourselves and become confident by immersing ourselves in whatever the present moment reveals to us. As an example, when we meditate, we relax and gradually quiet our mental chatter. In this way, we create a space for new insights. While we are calm, new ideas pop up in their own time. The bursts of creativity help us be innovative, solve problems, and set better goals.

4. Retreat trips give us time to reflect

Most of the time, we may pay great attention to the external world and how it validates us. Sometimes we may get lost in meeting the enforced success or beauty standards that are, in fact, illusions. Instead of letting the outside world control our happiness, we can observe our thoughts, emotions, and sensations. Personal growth travel gives us plenty of time to deeply reflect on our thought patterns and habits. When we reduce the external and internal noise, we see the bigger picture without blaming others or ourselves. We make more mindful choices and open ourselves to changes for the better. We take responsibility for our actions, behavior, and life.

5. Transformational travel helps us discover our values

Self-improvement vacations are effective self-discovery tools. They can guide us through our inward journey. On our way, we discover what things are the most important to us. The vital step is to define our core values. When we align our goals with our values, we’ll design the life that we want.

In conclusion, travel and vacation are powerful personal development tools for us to understand and get to know ourselves better. Transformational travel helps us step outside of our comfort zone, gain new views and insights, be more present in the moment, include creativity into various aspects of our life, discover our values, and live a fulfilling and purposeful life.
